Frequently Asked Questions for IE 6
You've asked me to upgrade my browser, but why?
Because supporting IE 6 is extremely time-consuming and frankly, the less time spent supporting IE 6 means more time spent enhancing League Galaxy.
So what's the problem exactly?
The problem is that, well, to be blunt, IE 6 sucks. Kinda harsh, yes, but it's the truth nonetheless. IE 6 is several years old and has been plagued in recent years by major security flaws and a lack of support for web standards. To understand how IE 6 got to this point requires a history lesson which, while we'd like to tell, will bore you to sleep. The important thing is that browsers such as Firefox and Chrome came along that were more secure and provided much better support for web standards, thus leaving IE 6 severely behind the times.
OK, you've made your point. Does League Galaxy work at all with IE 6?
Actually yes, if you use IE 6 with League Galaxy everything will work, but your overall experience will suffer.
What do you mean "overall experience"?
We created League Galaxy to provide the best possible user experience available for managing your amateur sports teams, leagues, and organizations. However, to do that means we can't natively support IE 6. Many things you find in League Galaxy work exactly the same in IE 6 as they do in the other, more current browsers; however, certain things will not, such as image rendering and some layouts. We could get all technical here, but again, it will put you to sleep and you'll just think we're huge dorks.
Can't support IE 6 or won't?
You got us, and you're correct. We won't support IE 6. The main reason for this is that it's costly and time-consuming. Testing all the different areas of League Galaxy in different browsers can be a bit daunting, and having to account for IE 6 and it's non-conformance to web standards is simply a pain-in-the-butt. There are countless nuances (for the worse) between IE 6 and other browsers that make trying to cover all bases just too costly. We'd rather do our part to get people to upgrade so that they can enjoy League Galaxy the way it was intended.
I might not be a huge dork, but I'm still interested in the technical details. Got any references?
There's plenty of references and articles on the web that go on for days about all the problems with IE 6; just do a simple Google search and you're sure to find plenty. For something specific, here's an article detailing
CSS differences between IE 6, IE 7, and IE 8. Enjoy.
